Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism

Lord’s Day 18

Q46. What do you mean by saying, “He ascended to heaven”?

A46. That Christ, while his disciples watched, was taken up from the earth into heaven and remains there on our behalf until he comes again to judge the living and the dead.

Q47. But isn’t Christ with us until the end of the world as he promised us?

A47. Christ is true human and true God. In his human nature Christ is not now on earth; but in his divinity, majesty, grace, and Spirit he is never absent from us.

Q48. If his humanity is not present wherever his divinity is, then aren’t the two natures of Christ separated from each other?

A48. Certainly not. Since divinity is not limited and is present everywhere, it is evident that Christ’s divinity is surely beyond the bounds of the humanity that has been taken on, but at the same time his divinity is in and remains personally united to his humanity.

Q49. How does Christ’s ascension to heaven benefit us?

A49. First, he is our advocate in heaven in the presence of his Father. Second, we have our own flesh in heaven as a sure pledge that Christ our head will also take us, his members, up to himself. Third, he sends his Spirit to us on earth as a corresponding pledge. By the Spirit’s power we seek not earthly things but the things above, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand.

Old Testament Reading: [Jeremiah 2:20-28 CSB]

[20] For long ago I broke your yoke; I tore off your chains. You insisted, "I will not serve! " On every high hill and under every green tree you lay down like a prostitute. [21] I planted you, a choice vine from the very best seed. How then could you turn into a degenerate, foreign vine? [22] Even if you wash with lye and use a great amount of bleach, the stain of your iniquity is still in front of me. This is the Lord GOD's declaration. [23] How can you protest, "I am not defiled; I have not followed the Baals"? Look at your behavior in the valley; acknowledge what you have done. You are a swift young camel twisting and turning on her way, [24] a wild donkey at home in the wilderness. She sniffs the wind in the heat of her desire. Who can control her passion? All who look for her will not become weary; they will find her in her mating season. [25] Keep your feet from going bare and your throat from thirst. But you say, "It's hopeless; I love strangers, and I will continue to follow them." [26] Like the shame of a thief when he is caught, so the house of Israel has been put to shame. They, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets [27] say to a tree, "You are my father," and to a stone, "You gave birth to me." For they have turned their back to me and not their face, yet in their time of disaster they beg, "Rise up and save us! " [28] But where are your gods you made for yourself? Let them rise up and save you in your time of disaster if they can, for your gods are as numerous as your cities, Judah.

Confession of Sins

New Testament Reading: [1 Peter 2:1-10 CSB]

THE LIVING STONE AND A HOLY PEOPLE

[1] Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. [2] Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow up into your salvation, [3] if you have tasted that the Lord is good. [4] As you come to him, a living stone -- rejected by people but chosen and honored by God -- [5] you yourselves, as living stones, a spiritual house, are being built to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. [6] For it stands in Scripture: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and honored cornerstone, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame. [7] So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving, The stone that the builders rejected -- this one has become the cornerstone, [8] and A stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this. [9] But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. [10] Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Sermon Scripture Text: [Ephesians 4:17-24 CSB]

LIVING THE NEW LIFE

[17] Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thoughts. [18] They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their hearts. [19] They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for more and more. [20] But that is not how you came to know Christ, [21] assuming you heard about him and were taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, [22] to take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, [23] to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, [24] and to put on the new self, the one created according to God's likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.

FIGHTER VERSES:

·     This week’s verse to be memorized: [Psalm 79:9 ESV] [9] Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name's sake!

· Next week’s verse to be memorized: [Psalm 84:10-12 ESV] [10] For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. [11] For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. [12] O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!
