Confession of Faith: Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Old Testament Reading: [Jeremiah 1:11-19 CSB]
TWO VISIONS
[11] Then the word of the LORD came to me, asking, "What do you see, Jeremiah? " I replied, "I see a branch of an almond tree." [12] The LORD said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I watch over my word to accomplish it." [13] Again the word of the LORD came to me asking, "What do you see? " And I replied, "I see a boiling pot, its lip tilted from the north to the south." [14] Then the LORD said to me, "Disaster will be poured out from the north on all who live in the land. [15] "Indeed, I am about to summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north." This is the LORD's declaration. They will come, and each king will set up his throne at the entrance to Jerusalem's gates. They will attack all her surrounding walls and all the other cities of Judah. [16] "I will pronounce my judgments against them for all the evil they did when they abandoned me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands. [17] "Now, get ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them or I will cause you to cower before them. [18] "Today, I am the one who has made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land -- against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the population. [19] "They will fight against you but never prevail over you, since I am with you to rescue you." This is the LORD's declaration.
Confession of Sins
New Testament Reading: [1 Peter 1:10-21 CSB]
[10] Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who prophesied about the grace that would come to you, searched and carefully investigated. [11] They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. [12] It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven -- angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.
A CALL TO HOLY LIVING
[13] Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. [14] As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. [15] But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; [16] for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy. [17] If you appeal to the Father who judges impartially according to each one's work, you are to conduct yourselves in reverence during your time living as strangers. [18] For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, [19] but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb. [20] He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in these last times for you. [21] Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Sermon Scripture Text: [Isaiah 1:10-20 CSB]
[10] Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah! [11] "What are all your sacrifices to me? " asks the LORD. "I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I have no desire for the blood of bulls, lambs, or male goats. [12] "When you come to appear before me, who requires this from you -- this trampling of my courts? [13] "Stop bringing useless offerings. Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons and Sabbaths, and the calling of solemn assemblies -- I cannot stand iniquity with a festival. [14] "I hate your New Moons and prescribed festivals. They have become a burden to me; I am tired of putting up with them. [15] "When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look at you; even if you offer countless prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.
PURIFICATION OF JERUSALEM
[16] "Wash yourselves. Cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from my sight. Stop doing evil. [17] "Learn to do what is good. Pursue justice. Correct the oppressor. Defend the rights of the fatherless. Plead the widow's cause. [18] "Come, let's settle this," says the LORD. "Though your sins are scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are crimson red, they will be like wool. [19] "If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land. [20] "But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
