Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism

Lord’s Day 27

Q72: Does this outward washing with water itself wash away sins?

A72: No, only Jesus Christ’s blood and the Holy Spirit cleanse us from all sins.

Q73: Why then does the Holy Spirit call baptism the water of rebirth and the washing away of sins?

A73: God has good reason for these words. To begin with, God wants to teach us that the blood and Spirit of Christ take away our sins just as water removes dirt from the body. But more important, God wants to assure us, by this divine pledge and sign, that we are as truly washed of our sins spiritually as our bodies are washed with water physically.

Q74: Should infants also be baptized?

A74: Yes. Infants as well as adults are included in God’s covenant and people, and they, no less than adults, are promised deliverance from sin through Christ’s blood and the Holy Spirit who produces faith. Therefore, by baptism, the sign of the covenant, they too should be incorporated into the Christian church and distinguished from the children of unbelievers. This was done in the Old Testament by circumcision, which was replaced in the New Testament by baptism.

Old Testament Reading: [Jeremiah 7:16-26 CSB]

DO NOT PRAY FOR JUDAH

[Jer 7:16-26 CSB] [16] "As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not offer a cry or a prayer on their behalf, and do not beg me, for I will not listen to you. [17] "Don't you see how they behave in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? [18] "The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven, and they pour out drink offerings to other gods so that they provoke me to anger. [19] "But are they really provoking me? " This is the LORD's declaration. "Isn't it they themselves being provoked to disgrace? " [20] Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: "Look, my anger -- my burning wrath -- is about to be poured out on this place, on people and animals, on the tree of the field, and on the produce of the land. My wrath will burn and not be quenched."

OBEDIENCE OVER SACRIFICE

[21] This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: "Add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices, and eat the meat yourselves, [22] "for when I brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak with them or command them concerning burnt offering and sacrifice. [23] "However, I did give them this command: 'Obey me, and then I will be your God, and you will be my people. Follow every way I command you so that it may go well with you.' [24] "Yet they didn't listen or pay attention but followed their own advice and their own stubborn, evil heart. They went backward and not forward. [25] "Since the day your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until today, I have sent all my servants the prophets to you time and time again. [26] "However, my people wouldn't listen to me or pay attention but became obstinate; they did more evil than their ancestors.

Confession of Sins

New Testament Reading: [2 Peter 2:11-16 CSB]

[11] however, angels, who are greater in might and power, do not bring a slanderous charge against them before the Lord. [12] But these people, like irrational animals -- creatures of instinct born to be caught and destroyed -- slander what they do not understand, and in their destruction they too will be destroyed. [13] They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are spots and blemishes, delighting in their deceptions while they feast with you. [14] They have eyes full of adultery that never stop looking for sin. They seduce unstable people and have hearts trained in greed. Children under a curse! [15] They have gone astray by abandoning the straight path and have followed the path of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of wickedness [16] but received a rebuke for his lawlessness: A speechless donkey spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet's madness.

Sermon Scripture Text: [Ephesians 5:15-21 CSB]

CONSISTENCY IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

[15] Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk -- not as unwise people but as wise -- [16] making the most of the time, because the days are evil. [17] So don't be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. [18] And don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit: [19] speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, [20] giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, [21] submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.

FEC News & Updates

FIGHTER VERSES:

·     This week’s verse to be memorized: [Romans 8:1 ESV] [1] There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

· Next week’s verse to be memorized: [1John 2:15-17 ESV] [15] Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. [16] For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life--is not from the Father but is from the world. [17] And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
